Hella is the Team Supplier for Volvo Ocean Race Contender

The world's most extreme sailing event, the Volvo Ocean Race is an eight-month marathon through four oceans off five continents. To gain best advantage, the professional sailing teams' Volvo Open 70s are on the cusp of technological innovation. Hella marine was chosen as a Team Supplier of Emirates Team New Zealand, with many of its products used on the team's yacht, CAMPER.
Chosen for their reliability, light weight and electrical protection, CAMPER utilizes Hella marine LED navigation lights, EuroLED Touch interior lights, LED chart table lights and fans. Hella also supplied LED lights for the team's shore support.
"The Volvo Ocean Race is the ultimate durability test for any product. For top speed, every ounce counts on such a racing boat, and equipment can't fail in these high-pressure situations," said Jeremy Singleton, Hella marine global manager.
Hella marine Multivolt circuitry ensures consistent illumination and current protection from 9-33V DC under the most severe voltage fluctuations. It is also spike and polarity protected. Completely waterproof, Hella lights feature an impact- and shock-resistant housing for an ultra-long service life.
The 11th Volvo Ocean Race started in October 2011 in the Spanish port of Alicante and will finish in Galway, Ireland in July 2012. CAMPER's initial run from Alicante to Cape Town won the Leg 1 honors in the IWC Speed Record competition. In 24 hours the team sailed at an average of 23.09 knots, taking them farther in one day than any other crew.
The teams' state-of-the-art Volvo Open 70s are the fastest racing yachts in the world. During the event, each boat's 11 crew members endure temperatures ranging from 15° C to 40° C and some of the harshest sailing conditions on Earth. With only freeze-dried food to eat, they'll contend with hunger and severe sleep deprivation on legs lasting as long as 22 days.
