NZ Sailing Trust's Lion New Zealand has got a new lease of life.

14 March 2019 in News

NZ Sailing Trust EMPOWERS young New Zealander's and bring to life the values of Leadership, Teamwork, Courage and Environmental Awareness. Since 2008 NZ Sailing Trust has delivered lifetime experiences to over 8000 young people. Participants develop an appreciation of what it took to sail Lion NZ and Steinlager2 yachts around the world and complete a challenge with a sense of respect and admiration for their fellow sailors and the sea.

Sir Peter Blake’s Lion New Zealand has undergone an extensive 18-month restoration and will return to the Auckland Viaduct Harbour.

To celebrate this milestone, there will be free Public Open Days in Market Place Square, Viaduct on the 15th and 16th March. The public are invited to view Lion New Zealand, learn of her history and the role of the NZ Sailing Trust. A gold coin donation would be welcomed.

With a budget in excess of $1.1 million the restoration has been extensive, after 34 years no stone has been left unturned including a new mast, keel and everything in between (all electrical and engineering systems, navigational hardware, rudder and mast as well as sailing hardware).

Hella marine is again on board to support the Charity and their extensive refit with the latest LED lighting package that will keep students safe and increase functionality above and below deck.
